BEYOND THE FRAME

Experiencing 2D Natural Landscapes as Immersive Environments

Home: Welcome

Concept

Beyond the Frame is an interactive virtual tool for the presentation of images from the  Smithsonian’s Open Access collections. It converts a selection of natural landscape paintings into immersive three-dimensional spaces. Users will experience the landscapes through the eyes of the artist by “walking” into the painting, surrounding themselves with the artist’s interpretation of the natural world.

OUR GOALS

CONNECT

Connect users to a past that they don’t feel they have any real connection to through art and artefacts.

EDUCATE

Create early learning of the museum’s collection for guests before they visit, and hopefully deepen their connection to the work.

CONTEXTUALIZE

Re-contextualize historic museum paintings in a way that is meaningful and give users a better sense of their physical relation to them.

ENGAGE

Engage users with work they might otherwise consider rather dull
